Pokémon Unite Is Closing: Do Your Gems and Club Still Count?
Oct 27th '26 8:29am:
147 days. That is the distance between today, October 27, 2026, and 00:00 UTC on March 23, 2027, the moment Pokémon Unite stops opening on Switch and mobile. It is exactly 21 weeks, and the last day falls on a Tuesday.
The countdown that matters for your wallet started earlier, at 05:00 UTC today. The Pokémon Company suspended Aeos Gem sales and stopped accepting new Unite Club memberships. The game still runs. It just stopped taking money.
The official notice answers some questions and stays quiet on others, so it is best to go case by case. First, the calendar the notice itself gives:
- **October 27, 2026:** Aeos Gem sales and new Unite Club memberships end
- **November 12:** update with a special event and the Library feature
- **December 5:** qualifiers for the Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo begin
- **March 23, 2027, 00:00 UTC:** end of service on Switch and mobile
## If you still have Aeos Gems in your account
The ones you have can be used until the last day, and there is no way to buy more. That sounds minor, but it changes the nature of the decision. Until yesterday, spending Gems was a question of how much. Now it is a question of on what, with a deadline in sight and a balance that only goes down.
What the notice doesn't say is what happens to any Gems left on March 23. The literal reading is that they disappear with the service. Refunds don't appear in the English announcement either. The Japanese site Saiga NAK mentions refund information in its headline, but that concerns the Japanese announcement, and I found no confirmation that it applies outside Japan. Before you write your Gems off, open the customer support page for your region.
If you bought Gems in the last few days, one useful detail: customer support accepts requests until service ends. Asking now costs the same as asking in March, and only one of those options carries risk.
The one concrete recommendation is about the calendar. Don't spend Gems on cosmetics before November 12.
## Holowear and licenses: the date is November 12
That Thursday, an update arrives with a special event. The official text says players will be able to obtain various items, including Unite licenses and Holowear that have already appeared in the game. It doesn't say how, or at what cost. One outlet mentions event coins that can be exchanged for items, but that isn't in the official notice, so treat it as likely rather than guaranteed.
The Holowear you've been eyeing in the shop may become available another way in 16 days. It may not. Spending Gems on it before you see the event rules is, for now, the only costly mistake I can point to with any grounding.
## Unite Club: renewal stopped, the paid month continues
Existing members keep their benefits until the end of the current period. Auto-renewal was suspended at the same 05:00 UTC. If you renewed last week, you have your whole month. If you were going to renew the day after tomorrow, you no longer will.
One practical detail: the subscription runs through a store (Apple, Google or Nintendo), and the notice speaks for The Pokémon Company, not for them. Check in your store account that renewal shows as stopped instead of assuming.
## The Library has a hidden deadline
After March 23 there is no login and no matches. There is one exception: the Library feature, which arrives with the November 12 update and lets you view certain records and in-game content. The condition is that you download the Library data before 00:00 UTC on that day. Anyone who doesn't is left without it. The data generally can't move from one device to another, and there is no support for the feature after shutdown.
I read this less as preservation and more as a photo album stuck to one phone. If you change devices between now and March, or you tend to leave "I'll do it at the end" for the final weekend, this is the one trap with a hard-to-reverse consequence. Gems can be forgiven. Five years of records are unlikely to be recovered.
The game that launched on Switch on July 21, 2021 will keep hosting competitive play to the end. Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo qualifiers start on December 5, and the organizers confirm the tournament stays on. It is a curious picture, a championship with an expiry date in sight, and I don't know whether anyone who makes a living from the game will find it beautiful.
Before all this, Unite had already closed in Belgium and the Netherlands on November 30, 2025, in a case many linked to local loot box rules. The Pokémon Company never gave an official reason. For this shutdown, the global one, it hasn't given one either.
One last calendar detail. 00:00 UTC on March 23 is, in the US, Monday night, March 22: 8:00 p.m. in New York, 5:00 p.m. in Los Angeles. In Brazil, 9:00 p.m. For a lot of players, the last day of the game ends, in practice, a day early.
