That's the kind of detail, buried in a scene nobody was supposed to care about, that hints at where Rockstar actually spent the technical budget on this game. ## Water that seems to calculate, not just imitate And it's a lot of budget, from what we can tell. The water in GTA VI appears to be running a system far more ambitious than anything the series has attempted before. There's strong evidence of a real-time tide system — and it's worth separating what's confirmed from what's trailer-reading here, because a good chunk of what's circulating is community analysis, not an official Rockstar announcement. What can be said with more confidence is that the water no longer looks like static texture simulating wetness. Docks, beaches, and marshlands in Leonida show interaction with a water level that shifts over time, and some shots in trailer 2 even show flood-gauge markers in the swamps, modeled after the real ones used in Florida's flood-prone areas. It's not decoration — it's the kind of detail that only makes sense to include if the underlying system genuinely calculates variable water levels. The boat sequences caught the attention of people who analyze engines professionally. Some have identified behavior in trailer 2's waves that resembles WaveWorks-style technology — waves with real mass and momentum, reacting to the hull, instead of the simplified tessellation most games rely on. Again, this still sits in "third-party technical analysis" territory, not Rockstar confirmation, but the level of detail in the reading (underwater light refraction, foam forming where water meets an object, water darkening with depth) suggests it's not just visual coincidence. Diving is confirmed in Leonida Keys too, with modeled marine life — rays, turtles, schools of fish — which, combined with this water system, gives the impression of an ocean that actually exists in the game rather than just a pretty backdrop. ## Bodies that react instead of just animating Body physics follows the same logic of "it's not just an effect, it's a system reacting to context." Rockstar has used the Euphoria engine for character animation since GTA IV, but what shows up in trailer 2 looks like a considerably more sophisticated version — the community has informally been calling it "Euphoria 2.0," though that's not an official name, worth being upfront about that. What you can actually see without relying on rumor is the behavioral difference: around the 2:14 mark of trailer 2, an NPC stumbles after an apparent impact and, instead of simply dropping into the series' classic binary ragdoll, reaches out and grabs a nearby wall to try to recover balance. That's a real-time decision, not a pre-scripted fall animation. There's also visible muscle deformation, sweat, body parts swaying in response to movement — all of it suggesting a system calculating physical reaction moment to moment, rather than just playing back a pretty pre-recorded animation. ## The cost of the simulation All of this comes at a price, though, and that's where things get interesting for anyone actually planning to play the game. Simulating thousands of NPCs with this level of individual decision-making, tracking real-time water physics, calculating vehicle deformation on impact — that's heavy CPU work, not just GPU load, which is where most games concentrate their graphical demands. Richard Leadbetter at Digital Foundry noted that barring some "technological miracle," expect a locked 30 FPS on both PS5 and PS5 Pro, because the bottleneck isn't raw graphical horsepower, it's the sheer amount of simulation running simultaneously. Sony is expected to compensate with aggressive PSSR upscaling to keep the image at a clean 4K even without hitting 60 frames — which helps a lot with sharpness but doesn't solve the smoothness question for anyone who'd rather have the higher frame rate. For PC players the picture is even hazier, since there's still no official confirmation of a version or a release date. What's circulating are estimates based on console analysis: a CPU in the range of a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or i9-14900K, and a GPU starting around an RTX 4070 Ti to have any real headroom. Worth treating those numbers with caution — they're community projections built on what's known about the console version, not requirements published by Rockstar. But they're a useful expectation baseline: this isn't going to be a game that runs comfortably on mid-range hardware, especially if the goal is clearing the 60 FPS the consoles can't seem to sustain. There's an interesting parallel with Red Dead Redemption 2, which runs on an earlier version of this same Rockstar engine family. RDR2 also launched heavy and gained optimization over time, both through patches and in the PC version that arrived after console. No guarantee it plays out the same way here, but it's the closest track record available for estimating how Rockstar tends to handle this kind of technical ambition: launch heavy, tune it later. Which leaves the question nobody can answer for certain yet: is it worth playing on console at launch with a locked 30 FPS just to see this level of physics running "raw," or is it better to wait for an eventual, more optimized PC version, even knowing that could take a lot longer to arrive than the game itself in November.
