The Epic Games Store changed its free weekly games again. Until August 13th, you can grab two pretty interesting PC titles for nothing: Beacon Pines and We Were Here Together. Once you add them to your account, they stay in your library forever, as usual. The first one is Beacon Pines, a narrative adventure with a visual style that looks like it came straight out of an illustrated children's book, though the story gets much darker than it looks at first glance. You play as both the reader of the book and the main character, Luka, who's a little deer guy. The cool detail here is the word mechanic. As you explore the town, you find engraved words that you can drop into key moments to completely change how things play out. The game features an event tree that lets you jump back and try different words to see how the story shifts, which makes for a neat dynamic if you enjoy mysteries and messing around with alternate timelines. The other game is We Were Here Together, and this one is entirely built around co-op. If you try playing it alone you won't even get past the menu since there isn't even a single-player mode. The setup is that you and a friend are explorers stranded in Antarctica trying to solve puzzles inside Castle Rock. Each person is stuck in a different part of the map and you can't see each other's screen. The only way to move forward is by talking over a walkie-talkie and describing what you're looking at so the other person can figure out what to do on their end. You definitely need a working mic and a friend who has enough patience to play with you. To claim both, you just need to open the Epic launcher or head over to their site, log in, and click the get button on each game's page. It takes two seconds and doesn't cost anything.
