Sony is officially killing PlayStation discs—and there’s no going back

Man, it looks like the end of physical PlayStation games is actually happening way faster than we thought. That huge Sony DADC factory in Thalgau, Austria—which is basically their last big own-brand disc plant left—is completely switching gears. They are investing like 30 million euros to tear down the Blu-ray lines and replace them with machinery for microlenses used in car lights and VR tech.
Right now they make around 600,000 discs a day, and half of that is just for PlayStation. But the plan is to cut that down to just 10% by January 2028. The employees aren't getting fired, thankfully, but they're already being retrained for the new nano-tech stuff.
Honestly, this pretty much kills any hope that Sony might change their mind about going all-digital because of fan backlash. You don't spend millions of euros swapping out industrial production lines just to switch them back later. They've apparently been quietly testing this since late 2024, so the roadmap has been set for a while.
It makes sense from their business side since they already closed the US plants a couple of years ago and most people buy on the PS Store anyway, but it still sucks to see it actually happen. Guess we should probably start getting used to the idea that the PS6 won't even have a disc drive option at this rate.
